【Things you might not be aware of about Shue Yan Campus on Wan Chai Gap Road】
As you walk up the steep Wan Chai Gap Road or climb the Yen Wah Steps next to the Hopewell Centre, you will find a modest white building hidden among the high-rises. This is the Shue Yan University campus at 7 Wan Chai Gap Road. It opened in 1972 to meet the growing demand for education, serving as the secondary section of Shue Yan College.
In the 1970s, opportunities for higher education in Hong Kong were scarce, prompting many to attend evening classes. People juggled day jobs while pursuing their dreams at night. Wan Chai was bustling with night schools, including the former Victoria College, which provided English education and university preparatory classes. Although the secondary section of the Shue Yan College was closed in 1993, it continued its educational mission by hosting St. Gloria College until 2005.
In 2006, Shue Yan College was granted a university title which led to a surge in enrolment and a pressing need for more facilities at the Braemar Hill campus. To address this, the Wan Chai campus was refurbished and transformed into a second learning hub for Shue Yan University. Meanwhile, the Braemar Hill campus continued to grow, adding new facilities like the Research Institute Building, allowing the Wan Chai Gap campus to retire with pride.
