a| 清季自強運動起於一八六○年英法聯軍結束，迄於一八九四年中日甲午戰爭爆發，歷時三十餘年。這是一段非常重要的時間，因為這不僅是國人謀求對所謂中國數千年來的大變局所作有效因應求自強的開始，也是百餘年來中國進行現代化（modernization）所作種種努力的起步。這些史實，留給我們不少成功的範例與啟示，也提供我們若干失敗的經驗與教訓。
